Social Media Associate

General Summary

Oceana is seeking a social media associate to manage and grow our social and emerging media campaigning and daily outreach. This person will be a member of the Marketing and Communications e-activism team to help develop and execute digital advocacy and fundraising strategy and tactics for Oceana’s overarching campaigns. We work every day to be more effective and creative in online and mobile advocacy, and are looking to add capacity and a creative mind to the team. This person will work with communications and campaign staff to create social media campaigns, website content, action pages and other digital content to help meet Oceana’s communication goals—including increasing online actions, sign-ups, donations, website traffic and other engagement.

The associate will be data informed, actively participating in data collection and analysis to improve practices over time. The ideal candidate will have a passion for ocean conservation, experience running online advocacy campaigns, and always be looking for ways to improve their work and the team’s work at-large. This position reports to the Senior Manager, Digital Outreach.


Principal Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Functions:

  • Driving social media strategy to support Oceana campaigns and international brand
  • Daily updating of key social media platforms, including Twitter, Facebook and Instagram with Oceana information, calls to action, and ocean news
  • Identifying opportunities with the digital team to advance campaign and fundraising goals, including through messaging, calls to action and segmentation
  • Staying abreast of ocean news and events for rapid response
  • Creating online content for social media, blog, email and other channels as needed
  • Helping to build collateral in Engaging Networks
  • Regularly analyzing data, evaluating impact and looking for ways to improve results
  • Identifying new engagement tools and project opportunities that can truly make an impact for list growth and campaign goals
  • Always pushing for our digital outreach to be more effective, efficient, and motivating
  • Other duties as needed


Job Requirements

  • 1-3 years of experience driving social media engagement
  • Demonstrate curiosity, humility and a constant urge to learn and improve
  • Very strong written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills, an ability to effectively manage multiple projects and initiative to be productive during waiting periods
  • Attention to detail, strong follow-through, and the demonstrated ability to meet deadlines
  • Experience in social media management, with demonstrated experience in paid social media advertising
  • Minimum basic ability in HTML and CSS
  • Experience working with Engaging Networks or comparable CRM and Drupal or comparable CMS
  • Google Analytics experience or experience with other analytics software
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field or equivalent experience
  • Experience in Photoshop or InDesign a plus
  • Interest in ocean conservation a plus
