Web Developer

General Summary

Oceana’s Web Developer is responsible for maintaining, updating, improving and expanding Oceana’s website infrastructure with the focus on back-end development, while maintaining near 100% availability. The incumbent maintains and expands Oceana’s content management system (Drupal) and facilitates the publication of new online content by staff. The position supports and promotes the implementation of new applications and features for all of Oceana’s sites, empowers staff by leading training sessions and distributing training materials, and works with Oceana staff globally to ensure the web sites promote, support and reinforce Oceana’s objectives. The Web Developer is responsible for staying on top of current web technologies and constantly improving high level technical skills by going through web development/coding training regularly. International travel may be required.

 

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

Maintain and Expand Website Functionality

  • Maintain all Oceana websites through providing global web helpdesk support and keeping our open source content management systems up to date and running
  • Migrate Oceana to the newest stable version of Drupal at regular intervals
  • Work primarily in Drupal and to a lesser degree in WordPress: applying knowledge and coding expertise (PHP, SCSS, Oracle, JS, Python) in building new features/modules, debugging, theming and expanding functionality
  • Actively promote the adoption of the latest web features across all regional websites and encourages the development of region specific functionality

Cross Department Collaboration

  • Work closely with Operations, Marketing and Fundraising departments and global campaign/communication staff to develop system implementation and migration
  • Facilitate the expansion of existing systems and fundraising websites and promote the adoption of new platforms and features

Administration of LAMP/Open source environments

  • Monitor and manage web security by creating and maintaining user accounts and assigning access rights, assigning permissions and creating default stores
  • Maintain latest secure/stable version of Linux, Apache, MySQL and PHP on hosted servers

Training

  • Leads training sessions on content management for new and existing staff and distributes training materials on a regular basis

Project Management

  • Coordinate and track project deliverables based on project timelines established with local Communications staff members
  • Take ownership of IT projects as assigned and as managed by the IT Project document

General

  • Liaison with international offices to assist as needed
  • Perform other duties and functions as needed

 

Job Requirements

Education and work experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Web Development or Information Technology and experience with Web Development in a LAMP/Drupal environment

Skills and knowledge:

  • Experience in advanced site-building and developing web solutions in Drupal 7
  • Broad experience in creating custom Drupal modules
  • Proven skills in building responsive websites using Drupal 7, HTML5, CSS3, and JavaScript/jQuery
  • Strong knowledge in object-oriented PHP, Drupal theming, Search Engine Optimization and Social Media integration
  • Version control experience using Git/GitHub preferred
  • Understanding of the Software Development Lifecycle (e.g. Requirements, Design, Development, Testing)
  • Familiarity with WordPress is a plus
  • Excellent problem-solving skills, is a team player and a multi-tasker
  • Ability to communicate cross-culturally with global Oceana non-technical staff
  • Strong organizational skills with attention to detail. Strong work ethic, and possess a willingness and ability to learn. Ability to work independently
