Science & Strategy Intern

General Summary

Oceana seeks an intern with a passion for all things related to the ocean and experience in quantitative and qualitative research and policy analysis. The intern will work in the Science & Strategy unit at Oceana’s headquarters to conduct research and coordination on key projects as well as provide general support to the unit. The Science & Strategy unit provides advice and other services to campaigns across the organization and advances the learning of the organization under the direction of the Chief Scientist and CEO.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

The intern will conduct research and help coordinate projects (including the scoping of new issues and geographies), help organize training on advocacy campaigns, and compile monitoring and evaluation data. The intern will work with the team to support communications and information management needs. The intern may perform literature reviews and assist with writing reports and materials for non-scientific audiences.

Job Requirements

Education and work experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent to education and experience
  • Experience with detail-oriented event planning or logistics
  • Experience with assembling and analyzing quantitative data
  • Familiarity with public policy, monitoring and evaluation preferred
  • Familiarity with collaboration and information management software (e.g. Excel, Teams, Slack) is preferred

Skills and knowledge:

  • Demonstrated interest in the oceans or the environment
  • Organized working style and attention to detail
  • Adaptable to changing plans in a dynamic work environment
  • International work experience and/or Spanish language proficiency is preferred, Portuguese or Mandarin a plus
  • Ability to work effectively in a team and independently on discrete projects
  • Eligible to work in the U.S.

Note: Internships are paid, full-time in our Washington, DC office for a minimum of three months. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis and are reviewed periodically. Our internships do not always align with the academic calendar.
