Oceana is looking for a Marine Scientist who will work closely with Oceana’s Responsible Fishing Campaign team in support of Oceana’s Responsible Fishing campaigns in the United States. The Marine Scientist will assist campaigns protecting and restoring fisheries, saving the North Atlantic right whale, and improving shark fisheries management. The Marine Scientist will serve as an expert on fisheries and protected species issues, provide research to support further campaign goals, develop written materials including reports, comments and media statements, develop action plans and implement projects, and help to shape the strategy and direction of new and existing campaigns and initiatives. The Marine Scientist will have extensive contact with research scientist and representatives of government agencies and other stakeholders. This position reports to the Campaign Director and is based in the Washington, DC office.
The ideal candidate will have a Master’s degree in a relevant scientific discipline such as marine biology, oceanography, fisheries, or an equivalent of education and experience; knowledge or interest in ocean conservation; strong interest in campaigning; good attention to detail; and excellent research, writing, and communication skills. GIS experience is a plus.
