The Endangered Species Act (ESA), passed in 1973, is a cornerstone of wildlife conservation that protects more than 160 marine species by prohibiting the harming or killing of protected species and preserving the critical habitat that they need to recover. Oceana is fighting to defend this vital law from political and industrial interests that want to weaken these protections. Healthy oceans support biodiversity and provide economic benefits to coastal communities.

Save the Marine Mammal Protection Act

Since 1972, the Marine Mammal Protection Act (MMPA) has protected whales, dolphins, and other marine mammals from harm resulting from irresponsible fishing practices, vessel strikes, and modern threats like seismic airgun blasting. Oceana campaigns to defend the MMPA from proposed revisions that would weaken the act.

Protect North Atlantic Right Whales

North Atlantic right whales are one of the most endangered large whales on the planet, with only about 380 remaining. Vessel strikes and entanglements in fishing gear continue to push this species toward extinction. Oceana advocates for effective, science-based protections that reduce these threats​,​ giving North Atlantic right whales a better chance to recover.
