Associate on the Science & Strategy Team

Oceana Staff

Ana joined Oceana as an Associate on the Science & Strategy team in January 2026.

She is a trained marine ecologist passionate about fisheries science, ocean conservation and using science-based, collaborative approaches to strengthen coastal communities. Although she grew up hours from the coast in central Texas, Ana developed her love of the ocean through her parents, her father, who taught her how to fillet fish, and her mother, who passed down traditional seafood recipes from their hometown in coastal Mexico. Ana holds a B.S. in Biology with a concentration in Marine Science from the University of Texas at Austin and an M.S. in Marine Biology from the University of New Hampshire. Her graduate research examined how coastal fisheries along the Texas Gulf Coast respond to extreme events such as hurricanes and freeze events. After completing her M.S., Ana joined the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the National Sea Grant Office as a 2025 John A. Knauss Marine Policy Fellow, working with their marine debris grant portfolio. Here, she learned the importance of translating science into policy and is excited to bring that experience and her enthusiasm to a mission driven team dedicated to making research accessible and actionable for the communities that depend on healthy ocean ecosystems. In her free time, Ana enjoys hiking, anything by the water, reading, live music, going to the movies and watching sports (mostly soccer).
