Foothill Ranch, Cali. – Performance eyewear brand, Revo, has partnered with the world’s largest international group dedicated to ocean conservation, Oceana, to support the organization’s 2011 expeditions.
Revo polarized performance eyewear became integrated into Oceana’s expeditions as part of the crew’s essential gear in its variety of work environments. The partnership between Revo and Oceana is a great fit from both a performance and cultural perspective. Oceana is proud to partner with Revo given its efforts to design and create sustainable, highly technical product that performs in nature’s extremes.
Oceana was founded in 2001 after a commissioned study proved that less than half of one percent of all resources spent by environmental nonprofit groups in the United States went to ocean advocacy. Oceana was founded as the first organization working exclusively to fight ocean threats on a global scale.
Today, Oceana has offices in North America, South America, Central America and Europe, and since its inception less than ten years ago, the non-profit has achieved dozens of tangible policy victories for marine life and habitats. From stopping bottom trawling in sensitive habitat areas to protecting sea turtles from commercial fishing gear, Oceana represents a new hope for the world’s oceans.
As part of the collaboration with Oceana, Revo will provide eyewear for several expeditions in 2011. The first expedition – an Oceana collaboration with National Geographic to Chile’s Salas y Gómez Island – occurred in February and March, and upcoming trips include a two-month expedition on the Baltic Sea to uncover illegal fishing activities, a research expedition to the Mediterranean and western Atlantic to study, observe and help protect sharks and cetaceans, and finally, a North American research expedition focused on the ecosystem in California currents and the continuation of conservation and education efforts for new and existing protected areas.
“Oceana is incredibly grateful for Revo’s support of our expeditions and it was wonderful to kick start our relationship via our expedition to Salas y Gómez and Easter Island,” said Alex Munoz, Oceana’s Vice President for South America. “These trips are vital, since the photo and video documentation we collect allows Oceana to protect vulnerable marine habitats.”
In addition to supporting Oceana’s expeditions, Revo is a primary sponsor for Oceana’s World Oceans Day program, which includes its 3rd Annual Ocean Heroes Contest and its “Be an Ocean Hero” pledge drive. The contest, in which Oceana collected public nominations and selected finalists for both Adult and Junior categories, calls on the public to vote for their favorite ocean heroes between May 9 and May 31. The pledge drive, which calls on the public to “Pledge to be an Ocean Hero,” provides options for how anyone can be an ocean hero and kicks off June 1. World Oceans Day is June 8 and both the contest and pledge drive can be found at www.oceana.org/heroes.
The partnership with Oceana is a continuation of ongoing environmental advocacy sponsorships for Revo. The brand provided eyewear for 2010’s Plastiki Expedition, the ocean voyage of David de Rothschild and his team on a boat made of plastic bottles to raise awareness of the devastating effect of plastic waste on the ocean ecosystem. The Revo ambassador team also includes global water advocate Alexandra Cousteau and polar explorer and global warming expert Sebastian Copeland.
“Environmental consciousness has always been top of mind for Revo,” states Julie Schaffner, Revo Brand Director. “Coupled with the fact that seventy percent of our collection is made with sustainable frame materials, we strive to partner with people and organizations that have clear ecological or humanitarian aims. Oceana’s dedication to exploration for the purpose of raising awareness for key environmental issues is a mission shared by us both. We are proud to support their work.”
Revo eyewear is perfectly suited for the Oceana expedition teams given its premium high-contrast polarized lens technology, as well as lens coatings optimized for specific environments, including water. Revo optics also come standard with a mirror coating, backside anti-reflective coating and an Element Shed™ coating that keeps lenses cleaner longer.
