Earth Day is all about greenbacks

Environmental groups and corporations alike will spend parts of today stressing how “green” they are. At Oceana, we prefer to talk about how “blue” we are, but just for today I’d also like to focus on a little green – both financial and reptilian. On behalf of Earth Day, Oceana is working with Google to help raise money for our marine conservation programs. Using Google Checkout, you can make a donation to Oceana in honor of friends, family members, teachers, students, etc. and Google will place a pin on a map to mark your generosity. When any of your friends, family, teachers, students, etc. also make a donation, Google places pins for them too, allowing everyone in the donation chain to see how widespread their impact has become. Click here to see Oceana’s Google Checkout page. Our other green initiative of the day deals with the loggerhead sea turtle (I know they’re really more brown, but everyone thinks of turtles as being green, so for the sake of this posting, loggerhead sea turtles are completely, irrefutably, 100% green). Working with the Center for Biological Diversity, Oceana is petitioning the government to help with the recovery of loggerheads by formally uplisting them from threatened to endangered under the Endangered Species Act. The two federal agencies responsible for protecting loggerheads are taking comments on this important designation. Take a moment now to send a comment to the National Marine Fisheries Service and the Fish and Wildlife Service in support of uplisting loggerheads to the “endangered” level.
