Our Eco-Ocean Award
BY: Emily Fisher
We know we’re pretty great, but sometimes it’s nice to be recognized by others, too…In its August issue, Food & Wine magazine honors Oceana, along with North Atlantic Salmon Fund, Cleanfish and the Ocean Conservancy, with Eco-Ocean Awards. The award winners are recognized for their efforts in helping to make seafood sustainable.Courtney Sakai, our fishing subsidies campaign director, is quoted as saying, “Governments are paying fishermen to overfish… Much of the $30 billion in subsidies increases fishing capacity—the ability to fish longer, harder and farther away. It has helped produce a worldwide fishing fleet that’s up to 250 percent larger than what is required to fish at sustainable levels.”Thanks, Food & Wine.
