Manager, Impact and Economics
Sonia is a marine social scientist who joined Oceana in June 2018, shortly after completing her master’s degree in International Economics from the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies.
She also has dual bachelor’s degrees from the University of Georgia in International Relations and Comparative Literature. As one of the benefits of an IR degree, she has been lucky enough to study in India, Tanzania, Russia, and Italy and now speaks proficient Italian and Hindi.
Prior to graduate school, she worked at the Environmental Defense Fund as a project manager on the US oceans team. At Oceana, she provides research capacity for global campaigns on a variety of topics – monitoring and evaluation, food security, socio-economic status of fisheries and coastal communities, and transparency in governance, among others. She is committed to ensuring the preservation of biodiversity in tandem with the communities around it.
She enjoys living in DC – a city full of passionate and energetic people. In her free time, Sonia is an avid runner and loves cats.
