This morning’s explosion and fire on an offshore oil production platform owned by Mariner Energy near Vermilion Bay, LA, as reported by WDSU Television, New Orleans, is further evidence that offshore drilling is dangerous for humans and marine ecosystems.

“This latest explosion underscores the need for the U.S. to maintain its moratorium on all new offshore oil and gas drilling.  It’s another reminder that drilling accidents happen all too frequently.  We cannot afford to lose any more human lives, nor can we tolerate further damage to the gulf and its irreplaceable ocean ecosystems,” said Oceana senior campaign director Jacqueline Savitz.

Oceana’s team of marine scientists, economists, lawyers and advocates win specific and concrete policy changes to reduce pollution and prevent the irreversible collapse of fish populations, marine mammals and other sea life.  Global in scope and dedicated to conservation, Oceana has campaigners based in North America, Europe, South and Central America.
