Oceana Acting Campaign Director Michael Messmer released the following statement in regards to the FY24 Interior-Environment appropriations bill, approved in a House subcommittee last week, that mandates new offshore drilling leases:
“The drilling provisions being forced into the House Interior-Environment appropriations bill are outrageous, to say the least. Mandating more offshore drilling will only exacerbate the climate crisis and wreak havoc on Americans everywhere,” Oceana Acting Campaign Director Michael Messmer said. “It’s not a matter of if there will be another oil spill that damages our local communities and economies, but when. If approved, these extreme provisions will hurt our most vulnerable citizens and prevent us from taking the necessary path toward a viable clean energy future. The deeply harmful impacts of dirty and dangerous offshore drilling have never been clearer. The answer is simple: we must prevent new offshore drilling and protect our coastal communities.”
