World’s Leading Fisheries Scientists in Geneva Friday

Oceana to Host WTO Public Forum Panel about Future of Trade and Environment

Oceana, the largest international organization focused solely on ocean conservation, is hosting a panel discussion at the World Trade Organization (WTO) Public Forum Friday, September 17, 2010, entitled “The Future of Trade and the Environment: Creating the WTO’s Solution for Trade, Development, and Sustainable Oceans.”

During the session, leading international fisheries scientists Dr. Rainer Froese from Leibniz-Institute fur Meereswissenschaften in Kiel, Germany, and Dr. Anthony Charles, from St. Mary’s University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, will discuss the implications of global environmental issues on the multilateral trading system and the role and responsibility of the WTO to contribute to international solutions to these challenges. 

The session, moderated by former U.S. Ambassador to the WTO Peter Allgeier, will focus on global fisheries depletion and the WTO fisheries subsidies negotiations as a tangible example of how global environmental challenges and issues of natural resources sustainability are shaping world trade, and how the WTO can contribute to solving global environmental problems through new approaches and trade tools.
