Preventing Monster Fish Farms in Maine
Maine’s coastal way of life, economy, and natural beauty are at risk because of ambiguous regulations for the size or scale of marine fish farms. This opened the doors for Norwegian-based company American Aquafarms to apply for a monster fish farm right off the shore of Acadia National Park. After public outcry, the state government rejected American Aquafarms’ permit applications, but the situation revealed a glaring lack of protections against similar pursuits in the future.
This report outlines how Maine’s current regulations fail to protect the state’s waters from extremely large and disastrous aquaculture projects that are inherently risky, as well as provides several examples of how to limit the scale of salmon farms moving forward.
