Marine protected areas are meant to do exactly what the name implies: protect critical ocean areas that support our global population as a source of food, recreation, and employment. Yet too often, as Oceana’s report shows, they’re exploited for fishing. Using Global Fishing Watch, we investigated whether fishing boats and other vessels were following protection measures by identifying 19 protected areas around the world to take a deeper look. This report shows the data gathered by tracking vessel movement in and around these MPAs from January 2017 to December 2020, and outlines recommended steps to combat problematic fishing activity in these areas.
